Celebrate Chinese New Year - the Year of the Rat
Chinese New Year in 2020 is on 25th January and it's the year of the Rat. The Chinese consider the Rat a symbol of wealth and surplus so let's join in the celebrations.
The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival lasts for 16 days and is the most important Chinese celebration of the year when families celebrate together.
Celebrations start with the Laba festival 2nd January. 17th January is the day to clean the house and the New Year shopping should be done by 23rd January. New Year decorations go up on 24th January in readiness for New Year's Day on 25th January. Celebrations include meals, new clothes, fire crackers, fireworks, lion and dragon dances. The festivites continue in to February culminating with the Lantern Festival on 8th February.
The Chinese New Year is a great excuse for all of us to celebrate Chinese cooking.
All you need is a few ingredients, a chopping board, a sharp knife, a frying pan or wok and a turner. We have a selection of suitable knives including chef’s knives, Santoku knives and a cleaver.
